Expert summary

Backpacking is also called tramping, trekking, or bushwalking. The main characteristic is that it combines hiking and camping. A backpacking trip must have at least one overnight stay in the wilderness. The name comes from ‘backpack’ which contains everything including food, water and camping materials. Sometimes a backpacking trip may last weeks or even months when it is a long-distance expedition. In such cases occasional food and supply drops are arranged. Established mountain huts or shelters are available in some places. Backpackers ensure that they do not impact the land through which they hike. Leave No Trace movement supports low-impact backpacking and gives guidelines. ‘Backpacking’ is also used to describe the holidays of (young) people traveling the world with only a backpack of luggage.
